Sorry to everyone who’s enjoyed the last 130 years of science and culture journalism, but Disney needs the money to fund Toy Story 9

June 24th/25th is really the turning point in Jonathan’s story here isn’t it

The masquerade has basically dropped. Dracula’s just locking him in his room whenever now. He murders a woman in front of him. The girlies are chasing him in the hallways. The letters have been posted. The clock is ticking down.

He spent most of this month sitting on his bed cudgelling his brains and he’s come up with nothing. He’s no longer even trying to keep it together - he rages, he screams, he cries. He no longer questions if he’s imagining things or not, this is just his life now.

And Jonathan finally snaps. He’s done playing defensively. Best case scenario he’ll be dead in four days anyway. Why not climb the walls? What has he got to lose? His situation is not going to change from the outside. He’s spent weeks waiting for something to happen and now it has. It didn’t help him at all but perhaps it galvanized him.

The woman in the courtyard was never going to win but at least she did something. She stood up to evil. And like… it’s not like Jonathan has been passive this whole time. He’s been proactive from the very moment he realized he was in trouble. And it’s not like he can afford to drop his defense. But he’s now done all the Thinking he can reasonably do.

It’s time for Action

oh my other big dm tip is just. your campaign isn’t about you and your cool plot. it’s about your players and how to have fun as a group. if your plot doesn’t incorporate your players and give them agency, it isn’t an engaging plot.

my big player tip is: your dm is hosting a story for you. be willing to engage in it to the best of your ability.

it goes both ways. a dm should build their story to be told through the players and the players should be enthusiastic about engaging in that story.

i just simply think of a campaign’s story can be told by replacing the entire party with different characters then it’s probably not a great campaign. like yes modules exist and etc etc. but also modules work best when you CONNECT your character to the module’s plot and your dm engages with it.

like. if you could put your character into any other game with no changes to their story or you could replace your entire party in the game your dming with other characters and everything would be the same then. that’s not engaging. sorry.
